Vaiśampāyana said: Arjuna took a great deal of care in worshipping his preceptor and showed the greatest devotion in learning the art of weapons. He became a great favourite of Droṇa's.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अर्जुन ने अपने गुरु की पूजा करने में बहुत सावधानी बरती और हथियारों की कला सीखने में सबसे बड़ी भक्ति दिखाई। वह द्रोण का बहुत प्रिय बन गया।

Droṇa summoned the cook and told him secretly, "Never give Arjuna any food when it is dark."
द्रोण ने रसोइये को बुलाया और उससे गुप्त रूप से कहा, "अंधेरा होने पर अर्जुन को कभी भोजन न देना।"
One day, when Arjuna was eating, a wind arose and blew out the lamp and its light.
एक दिन, जब अर्जुन भोजन कर रहे थे, तभी हवा चली और दीपक तथा उसकी रोशनी बुझ गयी।
Arjuna continued to eat in the dark, his hand moving to his mouth from force of habit. The Pāṇḍava then began to practise in the night.
अर्जुन ने अँधेरे में खाना जारी रखा, आदत के कारण उसका हाथ उसके मुँह की ओर बढ़ रहा था। फिर पांडव रात्रि में अभ्यास करने लगे।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Droṇa heard the twang of his bowstring and came to him and embraced him. He said,
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! द्रोण ने उसकी धनुष की टंकार सुनी और उसके पास आकर उसे गले लगा लिया। उसने कहा,

Then Droṇa taught Arjuna the art of fighting from horses, elephants, chariots and on the ground.

Droṇa taught the Pāṇḍava how to fight in narrow confines with clubs, swords, spears, javelins and lances.

On witnessing his skills, thousands of kings and princes assembled to learn the science of Dhanur Veda.

O king! Ekalavya was the son of Hiranyadhanu, the king of the niṣāda-s. He came to Droṇa.

However, since he was the son of a niṣāda, Droṇa, who was learned in dharma, thought about it and refused to accept him as a student of archery, out of consideration for the others.

He began to worship and treat this as his preceptor, devoting his mind to learning archery in accordance with the proper disciplines.

As a consequence of his exceptional faith and supreme devotion, he acquired great dexterity in fixing an arrow to the string of the bow, aiming and then releasing it.

One day, with Droṇa's permission, all the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, conquerors of their enemies, went out on their chariots for a hunt.
एक दिन, द्रोण की अनुमति से, सभी कुरु और पांडव, अपने शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करने वाले, अपने रथों पर सवार होकर शिकार के लिए निकले।
O king! A servant followed the Pāṇḍava-s, carrying the required objects with him and he had a dog with him.

They wandered around in the forest, their hearts set on what they wished to do. The dog also wandered off in the forest, got lost and came upon the niṣāda.
वे जंगल में इधर-उधर भटकते रहे, उनका मन वही करने में लगा रहा जो वे करना चाहते थे। कुत्ता भी जंगल में भटक गया, भटक गया और निषाद के पास आ गया।
On seeing the dark niṣāda in the forest, his body covered with dirt and clad in a dark deerskin, the dog began to bark.
जंगल में काले निशाद को देखकर, उसका शरीर गंदगी से ढका हुआ था और काला मृगचर्म पहने हुए था, कुत्ता भौंकने लगा।
When it kept on barking, he displayed great dexterity. In one instant, he shot seven arrows into its mouth.
जब वह भौंकता रहा तो उसने बड़ी निपुणता दिखाई। उसने एक ही क्षण में उसके मुँह में सात बाण मारे।
The dog dashed back to the Pāṇḍava-s, its mouth full of arrows. On seeing this, the brave Pāṇḍava-s were extremely surprised.
कुत्ता वापस पांडवों की ओर दौड़ा, उसका मुँह तीरों से भरा हुआ था। यह देखकर वीर पाण्डवों को अत्यंत आश्चर्य हुआ।
At this supreme and dextrous feat of shooting blind, they praised the person who had done this, but were also ashamed of their own skills.
अंधे को गोली मारने की इस सर्वोच्च और निपुण उपलब्धि पर, उन्होंने उस व्यक्ति की प्रशंसा की जिसने ऐसा किया था, लेकिन वे अपने कौशल पर शर्मिंदा भी थे।
O king! The Pāṇḍava-s went out to search for the forest-dweller who had done this and found him, tirelessly shooting arrows.
हे राजा! पांडव उस वनवासी को खोजने निकले जिसने ऐसा किया था और उन्होंने उसे अथक तीर चलाते हुए पाया।

They did not know him and his appearance wasn't handsome. They asked him, "Who are you and whose son are you?"
वे उसे नहीं जानते थे और उसकी शक्ल भी सुन्दर नहीं थी। उन्होंने उस से पूछा, तू कौन है और किसका पुत्र है?
Ekalavya replied: "Know me to be the son of Hiranyadhanu, the king of the niṣāda-s. I am Droṇa's student and I am trying to become skilled in Dhanur Veda."

Vaiśampāyana said: The Pāṇḍava-s ascertained the details of everything that had happened. On return, they told Droṇa the entire story.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: पांडवों ने जो कुछ भी हुआ था उसका विवरण सुनिश्चित किया। लौटने पर उन्होंने द्रोण को सारी कहानी बतायी।
O king! Kaunteya Arjuna kept thinking about Ekalavya. He went to Droṇa and affectionately told him,
हे राजा! कौन्तेय अर्जुन एकलव्य के बारे में सोचते रहे। वह द्रोण के पास गये और उनसे स्नेहपूर्वक कहा,

नन्वहं परिरभ्यैकः प्रीतिपूर्वमिदं वचः भवतोक्तो न मे शिष्यस्त्वद्विशिष्टो भविष्यति
"In your affection, you embraced me and told me that no pupil of yours would ever be my equal.
"अपने स्नेह में, आपने मुझे गले लगा लिया और मुझसे कहा कि आपका कोई भी शिष्य कभी भी मेरे बराबर नहीं होगा।
How is it that you have another valorous pupil in this world, the son of the niṣāda king, who is better than everyone else?"
ऐसा कैसे है कि इस दुनिया में आपके पास एक और वीर शिष्य है, जो कि निषाद राजा का बेटा है, जो बाकी सभी से बेहतर है?"
Thereupon, Droṇa thought for a moment and arrived at a decision. He took Savyasachi with him and went to the niṣāda.
इसके बाद, द्रोण ने एक पल के लिए सोचा और एक निर्णय पर पहुंचे। उन्होंने सव्यसाची को अपने साथ लिया और निषाद के पास गये।
He found Ekalavya, his body covered with filth. His hair was matted and he was attired in rags. However, with a bow in his hand, he was ceaselessly shooting arrows.
उन्हें एकलव्य मिला, उसका शरीर गंदगी से सना हुआ था। उसके बाल उलझे हुए थे और उसने कपड़े पहने हुए थे। हालाँकि, वह हाथ में धनुष लेकर लगातार तीर चला रहा था।
On seeing Droṇa approach, Ekalavya went up to him. He prostrated himself on the ground and touched his feet with his head.

After worshipping Droṇa in the prescribed way, the niṣāda's son told him that he was his student and stood before him with joined hands.

At this, Droṇa told Ekalavya, "If you are my student, give me my fee."
इस पर द्रोण ने एकलव्य से कहा, "यदि तुम मेरे छात्र हो तो मुझे मेरी फीस दे दो।"
On hearing this, Ekalavya happily asked, "O illustrious one! What can I give you? Command me.
यह सुनकर एकलव्य ने ख़ुशी से पूछा, "हे महामहिम! मैं आपको क्या दे सकता हूँ? मुझे आज्ञा दीजिये।"

O you who know the brāhman! There is nothing that cannot be given to the preceptor." Droṇa said, "Give me your right thumb as a fee."
हे ब्रह्म को जानने वाले! ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जो गुरु को नहीं दिया जा सकता।" द्रोण ने कहा, "मुझे शुल्क के रूप में अपना दाहिना अंगूठा दे दो।"

एकलव्यस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचो द्रोणस्य दारुणम् प्रतिज्ञामात्मनो रक्षन्सत्ये च निरतः सदा
On hearing Droṇa's terrible words, Ekalavya kept his promise. He was always devoted to the truth.
द्रोण के भयानक शब्द सुनकर एकलव्य ने अपना वादा निभाया। वह सदैव सत्य के प्रति समर्पित रहते थे।
He cheerfully cut off his own right thumb, with happiness on his face and peace in his heart, and gave it to Droṇa.
चेहरे पर ख़ुशी और दिल में शांति के साथ, उन्होंने ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी अपना दाहिना अंगूठा काट लिया और द्रोण को दे दिया।

ततः परं तु नैषादिरङ्गुलीभिर्व्यकर्षत न तथा स तु शीघ्रोऽभूद्यथा पूर्वं नराधिप
O lord of men! After that, when he pulled the bowstring with his other fingers, the niṣāda found that he was no longer as swift as earlier.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! उसके बाद, जब उसने अपनी अन्य उंगलियों से धनुष की प्रत्यंचा खींची, तो निषाद को पता चला कि वह अब पहले की तरह तेज़ नहीं है।
Arjuna was pleased and his fever went away. Droṇa's words, that no one would be able to surpass Arjuna, came true.
इससे अर्जुन प्रसन्न हुए और उनका ज्वर दूर हो गया। द्रोण के शब्द, कि कोई भी अर्जुन से आगे नहीं बढ़ पाएगा, सच हो गए।
Among all the Kuru-s who were Droṇa's students, two became particularly skilled in fighting with clubs — Duryodhana and Bhīmā.
द्रोण के शिष्य सभी कुरुओं में से दो दुर्योधन और भीम गदाओं से लड़ने में विशेष रूप से कुशल हो गए थे।
Aśvatthāma excelled in the use of all secret weapons. The twins were better than all other men in the use of the sword. Yudhiṣṭhira was supreme in fighting with chariots. However, Dhanañjayā was the best in fighting with every weapon.
अश्वत्थामा सभी गुप्त हथियारों के प्रयोग में निपुण था। तलवार के इस्तेमाल में जुड़वाँ बच्चे अन्य सभी पुरुषों से बेहतर थे। युधिष्ठिर रथों से युद्ध करने में श्रेष्ठ थे। हालाँकि, धनंजय हर हथियार से लड़ने में सर्वश्रेष्ठ थे।

The Pāṇḍava was famous on earth, right up to the frontiers of the ocean, for his intelligence, perseverance, strength and enterprise in all weapons. He was thus the foremost among all warriors.
पांडव अपनी बुद्धिमत्ता, दृढ़ता, शक्ति और सभी हथियारों में उद्यम के लिए समुद्र की सीमा तक पृथ्वी पर प्रसिद्ध थे। इस प्रकार वह सभी योद्धाओं में सबसे अग्रणी था।

अस्त्रे गुर्वनुरागे च विशिष्टोऽभवदर्जुनः तुल्येष्वस्त्रोपदेशेषु सौष्ठवेन च वीर्यवान् एकः सर्वकुमाराणां बभूवातिरथोऽर्जुनः
Arjuna was special, not just in his knowledge of weapons, but also in his devotion to his preceptor, though the instructions were the same for everyone. Alone among all the princes, Arjuna became an atiratha.
अर्जुन न केवल अपने हथियारों के ज्ञान में, बल्कि अपने गुरु के प्रति समर्पण में भी विशेष थे, हालाँकि निर्देश सभी के लिए समान थे। सभी राजकुमारों के बीच अकेले अर्जुन अतिरथ बन गये।
O lord of men! Dhṛtarāṣṭra's evil-souled sons could not stand Bhīmasena's great strength and Arjuna's great skill and hated them.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! धृतराष्ट्र के दुष्ट पुत्र भीमसेन की महान शक्ति और अर्जुन के महान कौशल को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सके और उनसे नफरत करते थे।
O bull among men! When they became skilled in all knowledge, in a desire to examine their skill with weapons, Droṇa assembled them together.
हे मनुष्यों में बैल! जब वे सभी विद्याओं में निपुण हो गये, तो शस्त्र-विद्या की परीक्षा लेने की इच्छा से द्रोण ने उन्हें एक साथ इकट्ठा किया।
He got an artisan to construct an artificial bird and placed it on top of a tree. The princes could hardly see it and it was to be used as a target.
उसने एक कारीगर से एक कृत्रिम पक्षी बनवाया और उसे एक पेड़ के ऊपर रख दिया। राजकुमार इसे मुश्किल से देख सकते थे और इसे एक लक्ष्य के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया जाना था।
Droṇa said: "Quickly pick up your bows, all of you. Fix arrows to the string of the bow, stand here and aim at that bird in the tree.

O sons! When I give you permission, one after another, slice off the bird's head."
हे पुत्रो! जब मैं तुम्हें अनुमति दूं, तो एक-एक करके पक्षी का सिर काट देना।”
Vaiśampāyana said: The greatest of Āṅgirasa's descendants first addressed Yudhiṣṭhira. "O invincible one! Aim with your arrow and let it go, as soon as I have asked you to."
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अंगिरस के सबसे महान वंशजों ने सबसे पहले युधिष्ठिर को संबोधित किया। "हे अजेय! अपने तीर से निशाना साधो और जैसे ही मैंने तुमसे कहा, उसे छोड़ दो।"
Yudhiṣṭhira first picked up a bow that made a loud noise. Then, as instructed by his preceptor, he stood, aiming at the bird.

The descendant of the Kuru lineage stood there, with his bow stretched. O, bull among the Kuru lineage! After a short time, Droṇa asked,
कुरु वंश का वंशज धनुष तानकर वहीं खड़ा था। हे कुरु वंश के बैल! थोड़ी देर बाद द्रोण ने पूछा,
"O prince! Can you see that bird on the top of the tree?" "I can see it," Yudhiṣṭhira replied to his preceptor.
"हे राजकुमार! क्या तुम उस पक्षी को पेड़ की चोटी पर देख सकते हो?" "मैं इसे देख सकता हूँ," युधिष्ठिर ने अपने गुरु को उत्तर दिया।

After some time, Droṇa again asked, "Can you see the tree? Can you see me? Can you see your brothers?"
कुछ देर बाद द्रोण ने फिर पूछा, "क्या तुम पेड़ देख सकते हो? क्या तुम मुझे देख सकते हो? क्या तुम अपने भाइयों को देख सकते हो?"

तमुवाच स कौन्तेयः पश्याम्येनं वनस्पतिम् भवन्तं च तथा भ्रातॄन्भासं चेति पुनः पुनः
In reply to each question, Kaunteya answered, one after the other: "I can see the large tree. I can see you. I can see the bird."
प्रत्येक प्रश्न के उत्तर में, कौन्तेय ने एक के बाद एक उत्तर दिया: "मैं बड़े पेड़ को देख सकता हूँ। मैं तुम्हें देख सकता हूँ। मैं पक्षी को देख सकता हूँ।"
Droṇa was displeased at these words and reproachfully told him, "This is not for you. You will not be able to hit the target."

Then the immensely illustrious one placed Duryodhana in the same position and Dhṛtarāṣṭra's other sons, one after another, so as to test them.
तब अत्यंत तेजस्वी ने उनकी परीक्षा लेने के लिए दुर्योधन और धृतराष्ट्र के अन्य पुत्रों को एक के बाद एक एक ही स्थान पर रखा।

Bhīmā and the other students and the kings who had come from other countries were also asked. All of them said that they could see everything and were scolded.
भीम तथा अन्य शिष्यों तथा अन्य देशों से आये राजाओं से भी पूछा गया। उन सभी ने कहा कि वे सब कुछ देख सकते हैं और उन्हें डांटा गया।
Smilingly, Droṇa then summoned Dhanañjayā. "This target is for you to shoot down. Listen.
फिर मुस्कुराते हुए द्रोण ने धनंजय को बुलाया। "यह लक्ष्य तुम्हें मार गिराने के लिए है। सुनो।"

मद्वाक्यसमकालं ते मोक्तव्योऽत्र भवेच्छरः वितत्य कार्मुकं पुत्र तिष्ठ तावन्मुहूर्तकम्
As soon as I ask you to, you must shoot. O son! Stand here for a moment, with your bow taut."
जैसे ही मैं तुमसे कहूँगा, तुम्हें गोली मार देनी चाहिए। हे वत्स एक क्षण के लिए धनुष तानकर यहीं खड़े रहो।"
Thus addressed, Savyasachi drew his bow into a semicircle, aimed at the target and stood there, as his preceptor had instructed.
इस प्रकार संबोधित करते हुए, सव्यसाची ने अपने धनुष को अर्धवृत्त में खींच लिया, लक्ष्य पर निशाना साधा और वहीं खड़ा हो गया, जैसा कि उसके गुरु ने निर्देश दिया था।
After a while, Droṇa asked him in the same way. "O Arjuna! Do you see the bird seated there? Do you see the tree? Do you see me?"
थोड़ी देर बाद द्रोण ने उससे वैसे ही पूछा। "हे अर्जुन! क्या तुम वहाँ बैठे पक्षी को देखते हो? क्या तुम पेड़ को देखते हो? क्या तुम मुझे देखते हो?"

पश्याम्येनं भासमिति द्रोणं पार्थोऽभ्यभाषत न तु वृक्षं भवन्तं वा पश्यामीति च भारत
Arjuna replied, "I can only see the bird. I cannot see the tree. Nor can I see you."
अर्जुन ने उत्तर दिया, "मैं केवल पक्षी को देख सकता हूँ। मैं पेड़ को नहीं देख सकता। न ही मैं आपको देख सकता हूँ।"
Pleased, the invincible Droṇa waited again for a moment. Then he again addressed the Pāṇḍava, bull among warriors. "If you can see the bird, describe it to me."
प्रसन्न होकर अजेय द्रोण ने एक क्षण फिर प्रतीक्षा की। फिर उन्होंने पांडवों को फिर से योद्धाओं में बैल कहकर संबोधित किया। "यदि आप पक्षी को देख सकते हैं, तो मुझे उसका वर्णन करें।"

Arjuna replied, "I can only see the bird's head. I cannot see its body."

अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु द्रोणो हृष्टतनूरुहः मुञ्चस्वेत्यब्रवीत्पार्थं स मुमोचाविचारयन्
At Arjuna's words, Droṇa was delighted and his hair stood up. He told Pārtha, "Shoot," and he let the arrow go.
अर्जुन के शब्दों पर, द्रोण प्रसन्न हुए और उनके रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। उन्होंने पार्थ से कहा, "गोली चलाओ," और उन्होंने तीर छोड़ दिया।
The Pāṇḍava sliced off the head of the bird on the tree with his sharp arrow and brought it down on the ground.

When Phālguna succeeded in this task, Droṇa embraced him and deduced that Drupada and his relatives had already been vanquished in battle.

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! A few days later, the best of those of the Āṅgirasa lineage went with his students to the Gāṅga to bathe.

When Droṇa entered the water, a powerful crocodile grabbed him by the thigh, as if sent by destiny itself.
जब द्रोण ने पानी में प्रवेश किया, तो एक शक्तिशाली मगरमच्छ ने उनकी जाँघ पकड़ ली, मानो भाग्य ने ही उन्हें भेजा हो।
Though quite capable of saving himself, Droṇa told his students, "Kill the crocodile and quickly save me."

Even before he had finished speaking, Bībhatsu let loose five sharp arrows that killed the crocodile under the water. The others were still standing around, looking confused.

On seeing the Pāṇḍava's swiftness in action, Droṇa was extremely pleased and decided that he was the best of his students.

The crocodile was chopped into many pieces through Pārtha's arrows. It let go of the great-souled one's thigh and returned to the five elements.

Bhāradvāja's son told the great-souled mahāratha, "O mighty-armed one! Receive this invincible and supreme weapon, named brahmashira, with the knowledge of releasing it and withdrawing it.

You must never use it against human beings. If it is used against an enemy whose energy is inferior, it will burn up the entire universe.
तुम्हें इसका प्रयोग कभी भी मनुष्यों के विरुद्ध नहीं करना चाहिए। यदि इसका उपयोग किसी ऐसे शत्रु के विरुद्ध किया जाए जिसकी ऊर्जा हीन हो, तो यह पूरे ब्रह्मांड को जला देगा।
O son! It is said that there is nothing superior to this weapon in the three worlds. Therefore, preserve it carefully and listen to my words.
हे वत्स ऐसा कहा जाता है कि तीनों लोकों में इस अस्त्र से बढ़कर कोई अस्त्र नहीं है। अत: इसे सावधानी से सुरक्षित रखो और मेरी बातें सुनो।
O brave one! If a superhuman enemy ever fights with you, use this weapon to kill him in battle."
हे वीर! यदि कभी कोई अतिमानवीय शत्रु तुमसे लड़ता है, तो युद्ध में उसे मारने के लिए इस हथियार का उपयोग करें।"
With joined hands, Bībhatsu promised that he would do as he had been asked and received the supreme weapon. His preceptor again told him, "No man in the world will be a greater archer than you."
हाथ जोड़कर बीभात्सु ने वादा किया कि वह वैसा ही करेगा जैसा उससे कहा गया है और उसे सर्वोच्च हथियार प्राप्त हुआ। उनके गुरु ने फिर उनसे कहा, "दुनिया में कोई भी व्यक्ति तुमसे बड़ा धनुर्धर नहीं होगा।"
